NOTES FROM OCTOBER 7th  MEETING

In attendance:
Jim, Lesa, Tim, Pam, Joe, Debra, Jan, Louis, Dena

Discussion

Note: The next regularly scheduled meeting is Sunday, October 21 at 11 am.
Planning for Fall Festival (Nov. 11) will be a main topic.

Pond work day: Sunday, October 21 from noon on (after the next meeting.) Please plan to come and work – the garden needs at least 10-15 people. It’s a big job. Bamboo must be removed, fencing needs to be installed, etc. Please call Tim 212-254-5456 to confirm. If you haven’t had time or been around to work in the garden this year, now is the time.

Green Thumb meeting: 5:30 Tuesday in Brooklyn. Pam, Jan and Ken will attend. Meeting concerns structures in the gardens and may impact the gazebo.

RAT inspector visit and front of garden clean-up: The NYC rat inspector found evidence of rats in the garden – holes in front near fence and in the back near rubble pile. This is something that concerns all garden members, and it is a 365 day a year issue. When you go to the garden, take a small bag to pick up trash. Rubber gloves are kept in the shed. Reminder when cleaning using the broom and shovel, please hose them off.

Fall festival planning: A combined fall festival/lantern festival will be held on Sunday November 11th. Tim reports that he doesn’t have commitments from musicians as yet. Judith is in charge of lining up performers for Unforgotten Voices. If we’re going to hold a raffle, we’ll need ideas and items…volunteers needed to do food shopping. Potluck items also needed. Are there volunteers to chair a bake sale? Jan is researching different lantern ideas for a craft project. Please attend the meeting on Sunday 10-21 to volunteer. Without a committed group to help out, the event may be cancelled.

Reinforcing cement slab, SW corner of garden: Discussed again. Jim reported (last year) that the low end of labor costs = about $140 per day per worker, so for two days of work, about $600 dollars to stabilize the SW corner of the garden using 4” of gravel, mesh wire and 4” of cement. Dumpsters (small) cost about $45 per day.

The area has to be cleaned out before any work can begin. Garden members are needed to help clean out the area…the debris must be separated (wood from brick, etc.) and pulverized. Does anyone know of any engineers who could volunteer to check out a sinkhole (old basement) in that area of the garden?

Shed organization and toy cleanup: Jim proposed moving the small shed over by the large shed and organizing/separating tools, getting rid of unusable items. Several members suggested that some toys are broken and should be recycled and/or disposed of properly. Sand that has been thrown out of the sandbox has become a litter box and has to be disposed of as well.

Bat houses: Reminder that bat house craft day is Sunday October 14th at 1 pm.

Pumpkin pickup: One or two more volunteers are needed to go to farmers market on 7th and Avenue A on Sunday October 28th a.m. Pumpkin carving begins at 1 pm.

Land for sale in Maine: Joe reports that he knows of 80 pristine acres of wooded area and a 20 acre lake for sale in Maine, asking price $900K; he suggests that the garden members go in on this property for a vacation area.

Adopt a cat: There is a very friendly orange cat living in the garden that is in need of a home. Maryann has details.

NOTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 23rd meeting

************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

NOTES FROM SEPTEMBER 9TH MEETING.

Members who signed in: Dianna and Imogen, Jan, Jim, Maryanne, Tim,
Ken, Sarah, Ben, Laura, Ninette, Lauren, Kate, Pam. Other members
were peripheral or in and out.

1: Electricity: Appointment for 9/10 at 9:30 A.M. for estimate of
cost to bring electric wiring to garden. Meter to be put into 386.
Conduits to come from there and to have outlets in patio area and
pond area.Pre estimate estimate is $3K to $4K.

2: Biodegradable Plates Cups and Cutlery: More have been ordered.
Members are asked to use these supplies, which are available in shed, instead of
purchasing your own. The cost for these is $1.00 per place setting.
All part of keeping our garden Green.

3: Parties and gatherings in Garden: There is a standard Party
Agreement, which was in the minutes sometime in the spring. It
should also be in the Green Book in the Gazebo. We are firming up and clarifying these rules.

4: Disposing of your Garbage from the Garden: Don't leave anything in the garden.
Take it to the public garbage can on the corner of 8th and C, or
take it home to your own garbage cans. Please remove ash from
garden. The removal of ash from garden may require you to return to
the garden the morning after your event. Please return if you need
to and completely remove the ashes from the garden. Ash should not
be tossed into common areas, nor should it be composted. Ash is not good for things that grow.

5:Bat Houses: Bat houses (2) will be built on West Side of Garden
(Bats like Eastern facing domiciles). We can collect guano, and
bats eat pesky insects like mosquitoes.

6: Oral History Day: Oral History will take place on September 23rd from 1 to 5, more or less.
Please bring something to eat, stories, reminiscences, and pictures,
paintings or drawings derived from Garden. We hope some former
members will join us to add to the mix. Tim will talk to Edward (s)
Santos, and Pam has contacted Sur, Alban Calderone, Jane Weissman
and Paula Hewitt. Kate will call Alice O'Malley and Kelly
MacGowan. We will scrapbook some pictures, and scan others. Jim
Fealy will video if he is in town. Anyone can jpeg pictures to
greenoasiscg@yahoo.com. Password is 123456. If anyone wishes to
contact the Citizen's Committee for a Grant to Publish a History of
the Garden, please feel free to do so.

7:Green Thumb Workshop on Garden Structures: to take plus on October
9th. Tim, Dianna, Jan, Pam, Ken volunteered. Lauren will alternate.

8: Please read your Green Thumb Fliers. We really need to
participate in more workshops so that we are eligible for tools,
soil, etc. Please go to workshops and report back to Garden
Membership. C'mon! Get active!

9. Birds and the Garden: Jan received lots of info from the Audubon
Society. Three years ago we did the `Christmas Bird Count,' and we
hope to join in more `backyard' birding activities. We talked about
Earth School using the garden for Birding curriculum. Pam
volunteered to bring back `Bird Log' she had made to keep in the
Gazebo a couple of years ago. It would be good to keep a record of
birds on an ongoing basis. The subject of Bird Feeders was again
discussed.

10: Bee Update: The bees are doing well though it seems that there
will probably not be the bounteous honey harvest we had gleefully
anticipated. We should be able to gather some honey next year.

Kate reported that she thought she had seen a queen bee out of the
hive sometime this summer. Queen Bees are larger than other bees
and are marked with a yellow spot on their back. If you find one,
please gently capture it in a cup, and call Jan at 212-254-7345. A
list of bee people will be posted. FYI – Queen Bees live for about
5 years. Worker bees live for about one week.

11: Pruning Workshop: Dianna will arrange for a pruning workshop
for sometime in late October or early November.

12: Wasp Nest: We'll ask `John the Bee Guy' if he knows anything
about wasps.

13: Pond Project: Paula of Open Road has been contacted to see if
volunteers will be available. If not, we will proceed.

14: Rubble: Jim will check on costs for a dumpster. We will have at
least one all-member garden workday in October.

15: Cats in Garden: Maryanne is taking a course on Trap, Neuter and
Release of feral cats. We are going to find homes for the kittens.
One kitten died, probably from rat poison.

16: Hallowe'en Pumpkin Carving: Pumpkin Carving to take place on
Sunday, October 28th. Everyone Welcome.

17. Green Oasis Fall Celebration: Music, Food, Crafts &
Celebration of Light. November 11th from 1-6PM. Peter's Greek Band,
Unforgotten Voices the Ozark Girls, and more! Tim will organize Music.

18. Noah Baen plans Gaia's Ring Celebration: Noah's celebration
will also take place on September 23rd. Our commitment to Gaia's
Ring for one year requires letting what grows voluntarily to
continue to grow. Bring musical instruments.

19: Weeds on Paths: Methods for minimizing weeds on paths were discussed.
Ben and Jan will coordinate efforts to reconstruct paths in spring of 2008

20: Garden Open Hours:
• All Green Thumb Gardens, including the Green Oasis, are
required by Green Thumb to keep the garden open for a minimum of ten
hours a week...
• We have committed to and posted Open Hours for five hours
each Saturday and five hours each Sunday during the gardening
season – April to November.
• Arrival and departure times are not arbitrary. Open hours
are from Noon to Five.
• If you cannot keep the hours for which you signed up, you
are responsible for finding a substitute.

Are there any additions or corrections?

Green Oasis Meeting Notes 8-19-07

In attendance: Pam, Jan, Ken, Donna, Jim, Maryanne, Christopher, John, Louis, Dena

Discussion:

Fish FYI – A question was raised about fish in winter. The fist stay in the pond but
are not fed once temperature drops to 40 degrees F.

New Fence Plan – Jim Fealy’s fence will be placed this coming week. It’s approximately 6” from its current location. He sent an email about this.

Compost – Please use compost that is next to the SILVER BUCKET and add chips to compost daily. Reminder that no ash, meat, dairy, skin, bones, etc. can be placed in the compost. Coffee grounds and eggshells are okay, as are vegetable and fruit peels, etc. Jan and Jim will get horse manure to speed the composting. For clippings and twigs, use single compost pile in SW corner of the garden.

Maryanne will check with Green Thumb about getting a trash stick (sharp “stick” on a pole to pick up trash.)

Fundraising – the more members who get involved with this the better the garden will be.
Various ideas floated, none salvaged from the water.

Oral History Day – is Sunday Sept. 23rd from 1-4 p.m. Discussion was held about archive methods (scrapbooks, having a scanner and computer in the garden that day, video, still photography, etc.) John will contact the Villager to announce the event. Pam will create a flyer. There will also be a low-key pot luck lunch. Anyone who knows of musicians or poets who might light to perform should get involved in the planning of this event.

A Fall Festival will be held separately if there is enough interest and volunteer action – sometime in October, date to be determined depending on Earth School and other school events (Could someone please confirm those dates?) Clay has been donated for a children’s art project.

Pumpkin carving could be held weekend of October 27-28. Halloween candy distribution/bags to be made for trick or treat…and no date has been set for a St. Martin’s Day lantern making event in November.

Tools – Jan brought flyers about new tools for the garden. $500 was allocated for purchase of new tools (such as rakes, etc.) Volunteers needed to organize shed, again.

Bees – will have honey this year. They are doing great. There will be a trip to Brooklyn to harvest the honey (volunteers, van needed in Sept/Oct) Our own harvester would be expensive and bulky ($1500 and takes up a lot of space!)

Pond work, dumpster date – to be determined in September.

NEXT MEETING SUNDAY SEPT. 9th at 11 a.m. NO MEETING LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Minutes from the August 5th meeting

Present: Joanna, Hugh, Pat, Manu, Pam, Laura, Ben, Mercedes, Louis, Dena

Oral History Day: Has been moved back one week to Sunday September 23rd (afternoon time TBD). Several members indicated that they thought a later date would encourage a better turnout among gardeners…

This day will NOT be combined with the Fall Festival, which will be held later in October, perhaps weekend of Oct. 27-28. Date TBD in early September. Perhaps this event will also include pumpkin carving or other fall activities?

Donations received: $300 from recent film shoot (to be put toward pond expenses). 25 lbs. of clay could be used for a children’s project.

Pond Project: Pond renovations, cleaning, waterfall work, adjustments to take place in September. Date TBD – Volunteers needed.

Pond Fence: A section of the south pond fence was found on the ground. It was repaired “temporarily” but permanent repairs are needed. Volunteers?

Cats and Kittens – Manu spoke out against feeding cats and kittens in the garden. Could they be trapped and homes be found?

Welcome to new members Hugh and Pat.

An interesting article about bees and colony collapse disorder can be found in this week’s New Yorker magazine:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/08/06/070806fa_fact_kolbert

New Hoses: The garden needs red or green, commercial grade hoses (not black, as they split more easily than others.)
Volunteers to go to Home Depot and buy at least 50 feet of such hose are needed.

Dumpster: Jim suggests that we rent a dumpster to clean out all of the accumulated junk in the back of the garden. A reminder to members NOT to drag old rugs, chairs, and junk into the garden…we need to get rid of the junk we already have. Perhaps a general clean up day when more members can commit to helping could be scheduled.

Biodegradable plates/silverware/cups: Are some still in the shed? Do they need to be reordered? Are people using them for BBQs and parties? Are gardeners collecting $1 per person when they do? It’s a mystery.

Check out new photos of KOI extravaganza and UNFORGOTTEN VOICES events at www.greenoasisgarden.net

Next meeting: Sunday, August 19th, 11 a.m.

*************************************************************************************************************************************

Minutes from the July 15th Meeting

Present: Jan, Sarah, Donna, Judith, Carla, Chris, Helen, Jennifer, and a few members wandering in and out.

Jan Reported on the Green Thumb Koi Extravaganza of July 14th. Jan, Jim, Asami & Pam all talked about different aspects of our pond. We had visited the 6BC Garden, and the 6th & B Garden. We felt good about our pond. The participants adjourned to our patio for apple juice and pretzels, which were furnished by Green Thumb. We were given a book on water gardening.Gardeners from all over the city had a chance to speak to one another.

(Pam now reports that our Pond Project is going to happen in September.)

As a result of a discussion that took place with members from the 6th & B garden and the Peachtree garden, there was talk about rule enforcement. The 6&B Garden has a Membershipofficer who reminds members when they are not keeping up their end of things.

Garden Behavior was also a topic. It was concluded that if gardeners have complaints about other gardeners they should bring their complaints to a meeting instead of muttering sotto voce imprecations behind the back of the person about whom one is complaining.

We discussed projects in our garden, concluding that If you really want to do a specific project, start talking to people, find out who is interested, plan what you want to do, and become the head of the project.

Committees: We have tried committees in the past, and found that the same people who are always active were the people who were active on the committees, so concluded that perhaps Ad Hoc committees are the answer.

Judith said that she is interested in working on a stage area.

Donna thought that the food furnished by the garden was a success at the June 23rd event. Trader Joes was said to have good prices. Whole Foods seems to have good condiments.

Judith wants people to help with Unforgotten Voices on Sunday, August 5th from 2-6PM.

Sayra Player came to request permission to film. It was approved and done. (Twigloo, anyone?)

Query: If a plot holder neglects to water plants and leaves their tomatoes to molder on the vine, is it still poaching for people to pick the tomatoes before they fall on the ground to rot?

Many Apologies for the lateness of these minutes.

Green Oasis/Gilbert’s Meeting Notes for July 1, 2007

More plants: Jack requested money to purchase additional perennials for the Gilbert’s side. $100 additional approved. (Donations covered the money spent for first Wayside Gardens purchase; those plants were planted on both sides of the garden.)

Pond/Pump: Needs to be cleaned daily. Jim gave a demonstration after the meeting – how to take pump apart, clean, and reassemble. Please sign log in gazebo if/when you clean the pump.

Garden Event $: Last Saturday’s event brought in approximately $250; T-shirt donations apx. $160, $32 for plates/cutlery, and $52 for the bake sale; all funds were given to Pam.

Meeting Start Time: is 11 a.m. This week’s meeting was a little better (started by 11:15) but
there were some comments that 11-12 is the meeting time…just a reminder.

Other reminders: Please send any fun pictures for the website to desno05@earthlink.net.

Green Thumb Ponds Walkaround: Set for July 17, Time TBA. (Pam?) Group will visit Green Oasis pond…

Routine Maintenance: Weeding, sweeping the front/hosing the front/trash pickup, sweep paths, and etc. Weed photos to be placed in gazebo. There was some talk about a weeding workshop (any volunteers to run it?) All members are to complete eight hours per month of volunteer service.

NEXT MEETING SUNDAY JULY 15 at 11 a.m.

Attendance: Jack, Diana, Pam, Jan, Mercedes, Sarah, Jim, Asami, Lesa, Louis, Dena

********************************************************************************************************************

Minutes to the Green Oasis Meeting 6-17-07

Events in Garden: There was a lengthy discussion about events in the garden. A brief synopsis follows:

Members: A suggested donation of $1 per person was approved for members who are having more than 12-15 persons at an event. Please, always post your event to the list serve in advance and write it on the calendar. Once it is posted to the list serve, it can also be added to the web calendar.

Non-members: There is a $100 deposit and the donation is $50 for 20 children (for example, for a birthday party.) “Sliding scale” donations are considered in case of hardship on a case by case basis. Not for profits, schools, and community groups do not have to donate.

ALL PARTICIPANTS IN EVENTS, whether by members or non-members, are subject to the rules of the garden, including clean-up rules. A new “Party Rules” list is up in the garden, in the gazebo and posted around the garden. (Full membership rights and responsibilities, children’s rules, and the “5 Easy Rules” are on the website, too.)

Prompt start to meetings: All meetings begin promptly at 11 a.m. A brief discussion yielded the conclusion that 11 a.m. is the preferred time for meetings to begin.

Pruning: A member noted that there has been some heavy handed pruning; and reminded members not to prune if you are not sure of what you are doing.

Weeding: A reminder that all members can help with weeding…very important to help reduce the mosquito population. Weed photos now up on website.

Unforgotten Voices: Will hold an event on August 5th (time TBD), will join in for Summer and Fall Festivals, too.

Summer Events Calendar: For month of July, Judith will take over for Tim – contact her to schedule events; during the month of August, Lawrence will take over the duty.

REMINDERS:
Summer Festival Event – will be held THIS Saturday June 23rd. There are musicians lined up and there will be open mic time. Jan and Corinna will run the chidren’s craft project (T-shirts), Lesa and Dena will organize the bake sale, thanks to those who offered to bake. Donna will do the food shopping; she’ll need help, please gather at garden by 12:30 to help with all festival set up.

Website – the website is up and running at www.greenoasisgarden.net. Please send photos, drawing jpegs, text, ideas for additional pages to desno05@earthlink.net

Minutes to the Green Oasis Meeting 6/3/07

Repairs. This was the first topic on the agenda to discuss as the step
up to the gazebo had broken just this morning so it was immediately
agreed upon that for the time being at least, a big stone block that
happened to be in the garden already would work as a good interim step
until a better step can be built.

Pam had spoken to someone at the East Village Community High School who
was interested in having a couple of “volunteers” from their school
who, as part of a school program they had in place, would help us on a
significant garden project, it was discussed that perhaps the pond area
that needs fixing along with the pond fence would be a good project to
talk to them about being involved in. Pam will follow up.

6/5 update Regarding Repairs to Pond: It dawns upon me that I didn't do a clear job of

stating

who is helping us repair the pond. Paula Hewitt (a former Green Oasis Member)and Tim

Rutgers of Open Road, a not for profit outfit that has worked on creating playgrounds

and doing other projects through the Trust for Public Land, and who also are involved

in the Garden on 11th Street between 1st and A next to the East Village Community High

School are the folks who are going to help us. They have been funded for a project

that involves eight young men who will be able to help us for about four hours a day

for two days. For two additional hours each day, they will work on a part of their

project, which involves an artistic representation of the work they will be doing.

That will be painted on a large piece of wood and displayed in the garden.

More information to follow.

Paper stuff used in the Garden. Jan explained that there was now
available to use (in the shed in the right hand corner) non plastic
cups/forks/knives/spoons and biodegradable paper goods that were
available for members to use at any parties, events, BBQ’s etc.
however, a $1 donation per person/setting would be appreciated on an honor
system. Money can be left in the shed where the goods are kept or
brought to a subsequent meeting. The garden strongly recommends the use
of these products as we endeavor to move away from the use of Styrofoam
and other non-biodegradable goods.

Beekeepers BBQ. Next Sunday, June 10th there will be a Bee Day,
beginning with the official checking of the hives with our bee experts
at 1pm. There will be bee overalls and masks for both grownups and
children who are interested in checking out the inside of the hives to
better understand what is going on up on the bee platform! Following
there will be a cook out a bit later in the afternoon that welcomes
everyone - please bring a side dish or a grill offering - it is a great
opportunity to learn more about the benefits of these interesting
critters being a part of our garden community!

June 23rd Summer Solstice Celebration. Jan is organizing crafts and
talked about some great tie-dye kits she had ordered that would be part
of the craft activities offered for everyone’s enjoyment on the day.
Any other craft projects that you may have in mind are greatly
welcomed! Lesa is organizing music; please speak up if you have some
music or spoken word to share that day, we are looking for more
entertainment!

Mike’s Mum, Donna, offered to bring the food for the day at the last
meeting. Food donations are always welcome! The event will take place
from 1-5pm. Dena has made a flyer, though she was not at the meeting
today personally to confirm this, several members were confident she
had designed one that would soon be available for posting around the
neighborhood. (Flyer is on this website under
Summer Festival.)

Tim has endeavored to post in some local publications,
but no listings confirmed as of yet. Please put the word out so we can
make this event a true community event! Everyone welcome!

Threat to the Gazebo. Pam had recently attended a meeting where it was
announced that there would be some attention towards banning structures
of a certain size and height from the community gardens, which may mean
there is a threat to our Gazebo. There is no other information as of
yet, stay tuned.

Compost move. Corinna suggested that the tree directly to the right of
the shed be moved or gotten rid of (nicely) somehow and the compost
moved closer to the shed allowing an additional BBQ area to be created
in the SW corner of the garden; this was very well received by the
garden members present. A date for beginning this project will be
announced soon for anyone wishing to be involved.

NO ASHES FROM THE BBQ TO BE DUMPED ANYWHERE IN THE GARDEN!! Please do
not think it is good for the plants because it is not and some of the
plants in the herb garden directly behind the BBQ have been fairing
poorly due to the amount of ashes in the soil. PLEASE TAKE THE ASHES
ALONG WITH THE LEFT OVER COALS OUT OF THE GARDEN WITH YOU. THANK YOU!

Misc. items:

Jim is getting a new belt for the chipper.

We can get as much horse manure from the mounted Police horses on Bond
Street.

The new pump has arrived for the pond. Monday June 11th is the
tentative date set for the installation. It requires a couple of steps,
but Pam will be in touch to confirm date and time of pond work, so look
out for that if you are interested in helping.

The cherry tree is bearing fruit; take advantage of it while they are
ripening on the tree!

Sarah volunteered to create some “friendly” signs that list the Kids
Rules in the garden that will be posted around in the hope that the
parents/care givers will control their little ones from the usual
annoyances that damage or put the garden at risk.

Next meeting: Sunday, June 17th at 11am at the
garden. Hope to see you there!

In attendance: Pam, Joe, Jan, Kim, Jennifer, Asami, Corinna,
Lauren and Blair, Mercedes, Tim, Ken, Denine, Ninette, Sarah (took notes!)

Green Oasis Meeting Notes 5-20-07

Discussion:

Website – the website is up and running at www.greenoasisgarden.net. Please send photos,
drawings, text, ideas for new pages to desno05@earthlink.net (Dena’s email.)
Dena will send the link to Green Thumb and mention the Summer Event.

Summer Festival Event – will be held on Saturday June 23rd.
Tim is going to contact musicians, Jan and Corinna will head up the chidren’s craft project (T-shirts), Lesa and Dena will chair the bake sale (please bake…),
Donna will do the food shopping, and will need some help, please! (We have a shopping list).

Plots – Lesa brought up the issue of missing members who have not started planting.

The May 15th deadline has been extended to May 26th. Would the eight members who have not contacted Lesa please do so; a vote was taken on this issue. If the members do not contact Lesa and begin cleaning and planting by May 26th, the plots will revert to common areas for 2007 season. Thanks.

Plants – Dena, Lesa and Pam met and ordered plants for common areas. They will arrive this week.
Please watch for an email, and all interested gardeners can meet later in the week to plant these
perennials/annuals in common areas.

REMINDER – Green Thumb summer tool/compost ? pickup in Queens is Saturday June 9th.

(from noon to two p.m.) It would be great if someone with a car/van could commit,

and a few members could help/be in the garden to unload supplies…

Gazebo Repair – Lesa has received two estimates from contractors/engineers,

both in the $2500-$3000 range; both agree that new footings would not be necessary,

but that cutting/capping/setting the gazebo on railroad ties would buy us another

fifteen to twenty years. Next step would be to find the money for this project.

(Home Depot grant does not look like a feasible option.) Best time for this project

would be in September/October. Tim will call the high school that specializes in

training contractors; they may be able to take it on as a project.

New Membership – Tim suggests that new members participate in a meeting and a

workday before joining the garden and receiving a key. This suggestion was voted

upon by members and was approved. Tessa suggests that an orientation would be

helpful not only for new members, but for many members who have questions.

She will start a Frequently Asked Questions list for the website. This will

go a long way to getting information out there. New members with questions

can also meet up with a buddy by requesting to do so. Several members have

 volunteered to help.

Bees – Jan reports that a beehive tool has already gone missing. Please –

the beehive tools and equipment are not toys and are not easily replaced. . .
The new queen is laying eggs and both C and D hives are doing well!

New Chairs – will be here on Monday, reports Corinna!

Pond news – members of pond committee met after the meeting; watch for their news next week.

Grill cleanup improving – reports Tim, but Lesa noticed ash dumped behind the grill. . .

please, ash must be taken out of the garden, it does not compost.

Next meeting: June 3, 2007 11 a.m.

In attendance:
Helen, Lesa, Joanna, Sabine, Tim, Jan, Pam, Ken, Corinna, Lawrence, Mercedes, Kim,

Ninette, Donna, Louis, Dena (anyone who didn’t sign in?)

Green Oasis Meeting Notes 5-6-07

Cleanup: Dianna suggested that members clean up after using the garden. There

have been a number of problems in this regard, trash left in the garden, etc.

Please clean up after using the garden. This includes putting trash out on Sun.,

Tues., and Thurs. eves for M/W/F pickup. Also includes cleaning ash from the

BBQ after it is cold – ash is not compost and should not be scattered around

the garden. Pam showed a FIVE SIMPLE RULES sign that will be posted, including kids rules.

Bee kit: Several members will look into getting the supplies needed

(by prescription) in case anyone who is allergic is stung by a bee.

Bee kit will be available in the gazebo.

Outreach: Tim will post signs to invite new members to join.

Community Board 3 meeting: Jan reporting. Jan, Lesa, Louis and Dena

attended the CB3 meeting on 5/5. Topics included rat bait boxes for

local gardens, tree pruning, and sidewalk repair by Green Thumb. A

Green Thumb representative was on hand and provided information for

all gardens. G.T. has budget issues through June 30th, but if we need help

for these issues we can call them. A supply distribution day will be held

on Saturday June 9th under the 59th St. Bridge in Long Island City (from 12-2 pm).

Our wish list includes a pole pruner, sturdy broom, rakes, and trowels.

Volunteers will be needed to go to the location on June 9th.

New Chairs: Corinna purchased six new wrought iron chairs for $288 through Ebay.

They will be delivered this week (?) Members voted to reimburse her for the purchase.

Herbs: Pam would like to plant additional community herb plots around the

garden in order to hold an herbal products workshop in the fall. Suggestions

included lemon verbena, comfrey, valerian, lavender, and bee balm. Several

Green Oasis Meeting Notes 4-29-07

Attendance: See last page

Discussion: Today was “sign up/key” day. Anyone who missed the meeting

must attend the next meeting (or subsequent meetings) in order to sign

up, pay dues, and obtain a key. The 2007 meeting schedule was mailed out,

but it is also printed at the end of this email. Those who wish to volunteer

for the board should do so during the next meeting.

Summer Solstice Celebration: G.O. will participate in the city-wide Music

in the Parks program as part of our annual Summer Solstice Celebration.

Date TBA (likely Saturday June 23rd). Tim is in charge of arranging musicians;

if interested, please contact him. Lesa and Dena will coordinate donations

for a bake sale. Dena will make a poster (it will be emailed, hard copied

in the garden for people to take a few and put them up, and we’ll put it

up on the website.) Pam and Jan will coordinate the art project, possibly

a tye-dye T-shirt and/or banner.

Jan has ordered biodegradable plates, cups, forks, so that the garden

will offer them instead of plastic and Styrofoam ($1/per person fee per event.)

Volunteers are needed to buy basic food supplies on the morning of the event

and prepare the pot luck tables. The garden will pay for them; usually $75-100 budget,

and the shopping list already exists (see last page of this e-mail), so it’s a

matter of having two or three volunteers go to Associate on 8th and C!

Please don’t be shy!

Oral History Day: Pam and Tim are coordinating; set for Sunday, September 16th,

rain date September 30th. Photos, stories and memorabilia are needed. Keep it in mind!

Mosaic Stepping Stone Workshop/Fix a Mushroom: Jan will conduct a series of

workshops to make more stepping stones. Also, there will be a date to repair

the winter’s “mushroom damage.” Dates TBA. (Mushroom repair next week?)

A landscape architect will be called in to help prepare the ground. Tim/Johanna both volunteered.

Please write or suggest any other workshop ideas at a meeting.

Fundraising/Budget: G.O.’s dues and fees (from events) cover most of our

basic operating expenses, currently running about $2,000 per year. We have

$8,000 in escrow. Over the past few years there have been a few attempts to

raise the vast sum of money (between $45-$50 K) needed to fully electrify

the garden and to run all water systems underground, but to no avail thus far.

A simple proposal/letter exists; if anyone would like to submit it, please

volunteer. Also, any other corporate/individual fundraising efforts would

be great. Remember that G.O. is a 501(C)(3) and is a tax deductible donation.

Garden Web Page: Jan has obtained the domain name
www.greenoasisgarden.org.

Dena and Louis will work on getting the basic site set up together with Jan,

and once the technical aspects are set, will invite garden members to submit

photos, comments, etc. Planning meeting set for this week.

Membership and Obligations: Members voted on the following:
Should fewer than eight hours per month of volunteer time be permitted? “NO”
The current eight hour per month requirement stands. This eight hours can

include keeping the garden open during the week…please log your time in the

logbook that is in the gazebo.

Should the garden offer a “Friends of G.O.” to donors who do not wish to be members,

but who make a donation? “YES”
The garden will offer a certificate to such donors. (Fundraising)

Should the garden offer a sponsoring membership system? “NO”
Membership will continue without sponsors, but a buddy system will be in place

should new members wish to have a guide to the garden. The following

veteran members have volunteered to be part of the “garden buddy”

program: Anna, Jennifer, Jan, Pam, Lesa, and Dena (Other volunteers would be welcome!)

A walk around will take place at least once a month after the meeting

so that all members understand what tasks need to take place.

Much of the gardening is seasonally based, which can be daunting to a new member.

The #1 thing that anyone can do at any time is to pick up trash

both inside the garden and along the fence/sidewalk. It accumulates

in the space of an hour, and it is our responsibility!

The RULES and KIDS RULES are posted in the vitrine, and are in the gazebo log.

They will be sent out again, and this year, each event (sponsor/host) will

receive them in advance in a postcard format. (Jennifer L. suggested this.)

Tim (or whoever is keeping the garden event calendar) can email the rules

in advance. Reminder that ball playing, running with pointed sticks, breaking

stones and glass with hammers, tree climbing, and the like are not permitted

…while the garden carries insurance through the city, no one wants to see any

type of accident occur. EVER!

Community Board 3 meeting: Next Saturday, May 5th, 10:30 a.m. (sent out

in previous email.) Many topics of interest to G.O. on the agenda.

As many members as possible should attend. The city can get involved

in sidewalk and tree maintenance, so that alone is a good reason to attend.

“TO DO” List: Mercedes will create (we can post on website!)

Dogs: Manu reported that he was bitten by a dog in the garden.

A reminder to keep an eye on your dog; if asked, please keep it

on a leash. And last but not least, the garden is not a doggie toilet.

Lesa and Anna suggest that dog urine is already killing some plants,

and Jennifer reports that she had to clean up NUMEROUS dog piles the other day.

Bat Houses: Jim and Jan will conduct a bat house workshop. Date TBA.

A member asked if we have to order bats. Unlike bees, bats just

show up, and they are great for the ecosystem! (Check out Tompkins Square at sunset.)

Compost: Jim will organize a compost workshop for all who are

interested. The compost will have to be organized and the

chipper will be brought in from Tompkins Sq. Park…Date TBA.

Please bring your coffee grounds, fruit/vegetable peels,

eggshells (but no cooked foods) to the black plastic covered bins.

Do not place food compost in the leaves/sticks. And please –

no more shredded paper. It does not decompose and has chemicals

in it…we are not a recycling center.

Gazebo: Lesa spoke with an engineer who will come and take a

look at the gazebo – he may take charge of a project to repair it.

Update at next meeting.

Cleanup: Please do not bring any more “junk” furniture to the garden.

We have to clean up/repair the broken items that are already in the

garden. (Ideas: Mosaic for the metal tabletop? Repair broken benches

workshop?) An enormous effort went into cleaning up the shed, please

keep it organized and put things back where you found them. Garbage

pickup is M/W/F, so the trash can go out the night before on the

EAST side of the telephone pole.

Wood to repair plots: Johanna will go to Home Depot (note:

wood/topsoil/etc. arrived at 4 p.m. Sunday! And luckily,

there were members around to help unload the van.)

Plot repair dates TBA. If you are a good carpenter…please volunteer!

Plots: Lesa is again in charge – there is a waiting

list; if you’d like to add your name, please contact her.

Grape Arbor/Fence issue: Jim will be installing a new fence on

the border between G.O. and his property. This will entail

his rebuilding the grape arbor. The garden will lose about

six inches because our fence is currently on his property.

Pond repair: TBD. (who is in charge?) Pond fence?

Bee Update: The beekeeper was in the garden on Sunday afternoon (4/29).

Jan will report the outcome of this visit.

“Gaia’s Ring” Art Installation: Many of you may have noticed the

earth/artwork installation in the southeast corner “the stage area”

of the garden. This is “Gaia’s Ring” by artist Noah Baen. It is a

year-long installation. Noah thanked garden members, and will

keep everyone posted as to the events he plans to conduct.

Some members asked about the glass shards; they came out

of the earth, and he plans to leave them there. No decision

was reached about a fence around the installation. Please watch

that children do not play near the installation/glass.

Attendance:

Noah Baen (artist for installation “Gaia’s Ring”)
Amy, Barbara, Ruth, Chris, Jan, Ig, Jennifer, Susie, Anna
Tessa, Pam, Mike, Donna, Helen, Jack, Ken, Asami
Joanna, Jennifer, Corinna, Lesa, Louis, Dena
