Gilbert's Sculpture Garden John Gilbert Ingram, Sr. July 29, 1932 - January 2, 1999 Known to some as "John the Barber," John Gilbert Ingram, Sr. was born to the late Edward and Zella Ingram in Farmer, North Carolina. He received his early education in Thomasville, North Carolina and attended A&T College in Greensboro, NC. He served in the U.S. Army, receiving two medals for honor. He met and married Veretha Allen on August 4, 1957. They had three children. Among his hobbies and achievements were his great love for the art of sculpturing. It was a dream that he began very early in his life, when he worked as a carpenter in Thomasville. One can pass by the garden he founded and developed on East 8th Street and see a lot of the work that he has done with wood and nature. For many years he was the super of 368 East 8th Street, the white brick building next to his garden where he and his family resided. Gilbert's Sculpture Garden exists today because of the dedication of John Gilbert Ingram and its other founding members. |
